Nathan Cleary’s father and Penrith Panthers coach, Ivan Cleary, has hinted that a move to rugby union could be on the cards for his son in the future. While emphasizing Nathan’s deep commitment to rugby league and his success with the Panthers and NSW Blues, Ivan acknowledged the growing speculation about a potential code switch, especially given the allure of global opportunities and higher financial incentives in union.
Speaking to media, Ivan noted that while no formal discussions have taken place, he would support Nathan exploring new challenges if the timing and situation were right. “He’s still young, has achieved a lot in league, and I think it’s natural to be curious about other avenues,” Ivan said. “Union has a global reach that league doesn’t quite match.”
The comments come amid Rugby Australia’s recent push to attract high-profile league players ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Nathan Cleary, a two-time NRL premiership winner and State of Origin star, would be a marquee signing.
While a switch remains speculative, Ivan’s openness suggests the Cleary camp is not ruling anything out. Any potential move would likely occur after Nathan’s current contract with Penrith expires in 2027.
