The Penrith Panthers have issued a firm response amid intensifying speculation linking star halfback Nathan Cleary with a potential switch to rugby union. The rumours gained traction following reports of interest from Rugby Australia as part of their broader strategy to lure marquee NRL players ahead of upcoming international tournaments.
In a statement released on Friday, Panthers CEO Matt Cameron reaffirmed the club’s commitment to Cleary, calling him “an integral part of the Panthers’ future” and dismissing the speculation as unfounded. “Nathan is under contract with the club until the end of 2027, and there has been no approach or indication from his camp suggesting a desire to leave,” Cameron stated.
Cleary, a three-time NRL Premiership winner and arguably the game’s premier playmaker, has yet to comment directly, though sources close to him suggest he remains focused on leading Penrith to a fourth consecutive title.
