Cyclocross, one of cycling’s most demanding and dynamic disciplines, could finally make its debut at the Winter Olympics as early as 2030. The International Cycling Union (UCI) has reportedly intensified discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) about including the sport in the Winter Games program. If approved, this would open the door for legends like Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert—two of the greatest rivals in modern cycling—to compete for Olympic gold in one of their signature events.
Both riders have dominated cyclocross for years, with multiple world titles and epic duels across muddy, frozen courses. A Winter Olympic inclusion would be historic, as cycling has traditionally belonged to the Summer Games. It would also provide global exposure to a sport that combines endurance, technical skill, and raw power.
Van der Poel and Van Aert, already decorated in road racing and mountain biking, could potentially crown their careers with Olympic golds in their first sporting love. Fans and athletes alike see this as a long-overdue recognition of cyclocross’s athletic intensity. If the IOC approves the proposal, the 2030 Winter Olympics could mark a new era for the sport and its fierce champions.
