Ex-Arsenal Star Júlio Baptista Urges Club to Renew Thomas Partey’s Contract

Former Arsenal forward Júlio Baptista has publicly advised the Gunners to extend Thomas Partey’s contract, insisting that the midfielder remains a crucial figure in Mikel Arteta’s squad.

He Said:  I think for Arsenal, Thomas Partey has been an incredible player. In Partey, Arteta has found a player that understands what he wants. If I’m Arteta, I’d renew his contract but also bring in another player, and put him under a bit of pressure, make him sweat. Put a player behind him in the pecking order, who can start to understand how he plays, and what he does for the team and ease him into the action.

“I know he’s older, but I believe that his age shouldn’t be a decisive factor in whether or not Arsenal give him a new deal. Players are much fitter these days. Look at what Mo Salah is doing – you can still be a top, top player in great physical condition when you’re in your 30s. For me, age is not a big problem. The big problem is always if the player still has the mentally to be the best at that age. The mind is the most important factor, and I think with Partey, he could still produce the good for Arsenal for a few more years.”

Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in 2020, has had an injury-plagued spell in North London but has proven his quality when fit. With his current deal set to expire in 2025, speculation has grown over his future, but Baptista believes the club should prioritize keeping him.

Baptista’s Case for Partey’s Renewal
Speaking in a recent interview, Baptista emphasized Partey’s importance to Arsenal’s midfield structure.

“Thomas is a player with immense experience and quality. When he’s on the pitch, Arsenal look more balanced and controlled in midfield,”the Brazilian said. “Injuries have been a problem, but when he plays, you see his value. The club should try to keep him—players like him are hard to replace.”

Partey’s ability to break up play, progress the ball, and dictate tempo has been vital for Arsenal, especially during their 2022-23 title challenge. However, frequent fitness issues have limited his impact, leading some fans to question whether the club should move on.

What’s Next for Partey?

With Arsenal continuously linked to midfield reinforcements—including Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz—Partey’s future remains uncertain. However, if he can stay fit and regain his best form, Arteta may see him as a key piece for at least another season.

Baptista’s comments add weight to the argument that experience and stability in midfield could be just as valuable as new signings. Will Arsenal listen to the former star’s advice, or will they look to the transfer market for a long-term successor?

One thing is clear: the decision on Partey’s future could shape Arsenal’s midfield strategy for years to come.

What do you think? Should Arsenal renew Thomas Partey’s contract, or is it time to move on? Let us know in the comments.
