Veteran forward Josh Papali’i has made a candid admission about his NRL future, revealing he’s begun to consider life beyond the Canberra Raiders. After a surprise recall to the Queensland Maroons squad for State of Origin III, Papali’i acknowledged that while his passion for the game remains strong, his time in the NRL may be drawing to a close. “I’ve got to start looking elsewhere,” the 32-year-old said, hinting at potential opportunities overseas or even retirement.
Papali’i has been a cornerstone of the Raiders’ forward pack for over a decade and has played more than 280 NRL games. Despite stepping away from Origin duties in 2023, his return in 2025 highlights the high regard in which he is still held at representative level. However, with the Raiders rebuilding and younger talent emerging, Papali’i understands the time may be right to consider a change.
He hasn’t ruled out a final stint in the Super League or taking up a mentoring role, but made it clear he won’t make any rushed decisions. “I still love the game,” he said, “but I have to think about what’s best for my family.” For now, his focus remains on finishing the season strong.
