Former Broncos and Maroons coach Kevin Walters is poised to be named the next Australian Kangaroos head coach, reportedly signing a three‑game deal for the upcoming Ashes series in England later this year . He remains coy, stating: ā€œWe’ll just wait and see. Obviously I’d be very privileged and grateful to get the opportunity to coach Australiaā€ .

The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) reportedly fast-tracked the appointment following Mal Meninga’s departure to coach the new Perth Bears . Walters beat out contenders Brad Fittler and Cameron Smith, with Fittler withdrawing and Smith potentially joining as an assistant .

With the formal announcement expected this week, Walters, whose representative and NRL credentials are extensive, would bring prestige and local expertise to Australia’s national side. Only time—and performance in England—will tell if his national stint evolves into a longer-term leadership role.
