John Matuszak, known as “Tooz,” was a legendary NFL player most recognized for his time with the Oakland Raiders, where he wore jersey number 72. Born on October 25, 1950, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Matuszak was a towering defensive end, standing 6 feet 8 inches tall and weighing around 280 pounds. He was selected first overall in the 1973 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers but found his greatest success with the Raiders, where he played from 1976 to 1982.
Matuszak was a key part of the Raiders’ defensive line during their Super Bowl-winning seasons, including the victory in Super Bowl XV. Known for his toughness and aggressive style on the field, he helped define the gritty, rebellious image of the Raiders during the late ’70s and early ’80s.
Off the field, Matuszak had a larger-than-life personality. After retiring from football, he pursued an acting career, most notably playing the lovable “Sloth” in the 1985 cult classic The Goonies. His transition from NFL enforcer to Hollywood actor further solidified his legendary status. Sadly, John Matuszak passed away in 1989 at the age of 38, but his legacy as a Raider and a cultural icon continues to be remembered fondly.
