Stephen Crichton has opened up about the challenges he faced as captain of the Canterbury Bulldogs during the 2025 NRL season, describing it as a “massive lesson” in leadership and resilience. Taking on the leadership role at a club undergoing significant rebuilding, Crichton encountered intense pressure both on and off the field.
“It was tough, no doubt,” Crichton admitted. “Being captain means you’re not just focused on your own game but carrying the team’s spirit, especially when things aren’t going your way. There were times we struggled to find consistency, and that weighed on me.”
Despite the Bulldogs’ struggles, Crichton sees the experience as invaluable. “You learn a lot about yourself, about handling adversity, and about leading young guys through tough times. It’s not always about winning but about building character and culture.”
Crichton praised the Bulldogs’ commitment to growth, highlighting how the team’s determination is setting a foundation for future success. “We’re still growing, still learning. The lessons this year will make us stronger.”
Looking ahead, Crichton remains optimistic about Canterbury’s trajectory and his role within it. “It’s been a massive lesson, and I’m ready to keep pushing the team forward.”
