NSW Cup & Jersey Flegg: Round 20 Wrap
Round 20 of the NSW Cup delivered a thriller, with the Canberra Raiders edging past the Eels 26-24 in a nail-biting contest. Hohepa Puru starred for the Raiders with a try and consistent work through the middle, while James Schiller’s late line break proved decisive. The win keeps Canberra in finals contention as they aim to solidify their top-eight spot.
Meanwhile, in the Jersey Flegg Cup, the Raiders’ under-21s fell short in a hard-fought battle, going down 30-20 to Parramatta. Despite a strong start that included early tries from Jed Stuart and Chevy Stewart, errors and fatigue crept in during the second half. The Eels capitalised with a flurry of tries to seal the result.
There were still positives for the young Raiders, with fullback Stewart continuing his standout season, showcasing his footwork and playmaking under pressure. Coach Ash Barnes praised the squad’s resilience but stressed the need to tighten up defensively.
With just a few rounds remaining, both sides are in the fight for finals spots. The NSW Cup squad has momentum, while the Jersey Flegg team will need a strong finish to stay in the hunt. Round 21 promises more must-win football.
